Chicago’s Loop – This is the Big Time, Baby!

Second to New York City’s Midtown Manhattan, the Chicago Loop is the United States’ second largest commercial business district. The amount of dollars spent here is mind-boggling – nearly $2 billion worth of currency on retail alone passes hands. This is Chicago’s go-to destinations when it comes to shopping. Whether you’re shopping for downtown Chicago condos for sale, luxury apartments Chicago, or a trendy outfit at H&M, one thing is for certain – come to the Loop with some cash.

What’s the Deal About the Name?

The Loop is the heart, bread, and butter of Chicago. Not only is it’s Chicago’s commercial core, it is also the home to City Hall and the seat of Cook County. In the old days (late 19th Century), the cable cars cruised along a circular track, looping through the downtown business district. These cable cars were often working alongside horse and buggies (which are still a tourist draw downtown). Later, the elevated railway entered the scene, making cable cars redundant. Caveat* there is some controversy over whether the name arose from the cable cars looping or the elevated train car looping – but one thing is for certain: vehicles have looped in the past throughout downtown, and the name “The Loop” stuck.

Bordered by the Chicago River to the north and west, Lake Michigan to the east, and Roosevelt Road to the south, the Loop is the place for shopaholics and those who like to be downtown in the center of the action.

The Loop: Just a Few Highlights (and the Chicago Condos for Sale are Enticing!)

There are plenty of reasons to visit and live in the Loop. No wonder some of the most stunning Chicago condos for sale are located here, amongst the hotels, retail shops, office buildings, restaurants. Certainly, the Loop is a universe in and of itself. You can work here, eat here, play here, and well – live here. Most of the housing stock includes penthouse apartments, Chicago high rise condos, and lofts.

The public art, parks, and activities are too numerous to list – but let’s try, shall we?

Theater District: This is where everyone in Chicago flocks when they want to see a performance.

Magnificent Mile: Otherwise known as “Mag Mile”, the perfect place to window shop or simply – shop for reals– the many upscale retail establishments.

Restaurants (especially upscale and fine dining). Although lunch options are available for the day shifters working downtown, serving up sandwiches, salads, and pizza. Regarding the latter, Giordano’s has a location here, serving up some of Chicago’s best deep-dish style pizza.

Architecture: First there were tall buildings, then there were skyscrapers. That’s pretty much been the story of the Loop since the beginning. Check out the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) which was the world’s tallest building for 25 years. The Chicago Board of Trade building has historic landmark status – and when you see it, you’ll understand why!

Millennium Park: Spanning 25-acres, this breezy and green park is open all seasons, year-round. Check out the sculptures, fountains, and playgrounds for the kiddies. During the summer, Millennium Park hosts free movies and concerts. Of course, long after summer when the weather turns frosty there aren’t any tears as the main plaza is converted into an ice skating rink. Woo hoo!
