Old Town is in an advantageous location. Located in the north side of Chicago, it’s surrounded by the Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and the River North. With neighbors such as these, you’re pretty much set for life. For those who work in the downtown area, Old Town provides no nonsense access thanks to the CTA Red Line.

Home buyers have a lot to choose from when shopping in the Old Town as the available properties run the gamut, from historic townhomes to retro condos to newer, high-rise condos and even single-family residences. Newcomers who like to be close to the action may prefer to set their sights on the Wells Street Corridor. The Corridor puts you in the thick of it in terms of restaurants, bars, and entertainment – particularly after-hours.

Old Town has a fascinating history. Formerly swampland north of Chicago, German immigrants moved to what is now Old Town in the 19th century and cultivated celery, potatoes, and cabbages. Perhaps it was the pungent smell of the cabbages that gave the neighborhood the nickname, “The Cabbage Patch” – a name that persisted until the early 1900s. You won’t find cabbage fields in Old Town these days, however you will find many of Chicago’s historic, Victorian-era buildings remain. One such beauty is St. Michael’s Church – just one of seven buildings to have survived the Great Chicago Fire.

Residents and tourists alike are smitten by Old Town’s unique streets and alleys, many of which predate the Great Chicago Fire and are remarkable in that they are outliers to Chicago’s more typical, street grid layout.

There’s plenty of inspiration down every nook and cranny in Old Town, especially if you stroll the neighborhood in June during the annual Old Town Art Fair. This weekend-long event features over 250 artists, live music, food, activities for kids, as well as the renowned Garden Walk. The Garden Walk is a very special event where homeowners open their doors to the community to view their charmingly curated green spaces and gardens that make Old Town properties so special. Visitors also receive a fascinating historical background on both the neighborhood as well as residents’ homes. Perhaps you will be one such resident opening your home during Garden Walk in the future!
