Family-Oriented Nook Just a Throw from the Big City
North Center is bordered by Montrose Avenue to the north, Diversey Parkway to the south, Chicago River to the west, and Ravenswood Avenue to the east. North Center is home to many sub-neighborhoods, including Roscoe Village, St. Ben's, and Hamlin Park.
As with many other Chicago neighborhoods, North Center was settled by European immigrants – the many cultures have become entrenched in the area. Their influence can be seen in the architecture’s brick façades, leafy streets, and cornerstone parks. One of the North Center's most popular sub-neighborhoods is Roscoe Village for its interesting and varied architecture.
Once only accessible by the Chicago River and Little Fort Road (now Lincoln Avenue), North Center is one of the most family-friendly neighborhoods in the city. There’s a reason why families are drawn to this area, as it is home to some of Chicago’s best schools – coveted in the state, Lane Tech High School takes the cake, as well as Bell Elementary. Not to mention, North Center was voted one of Chicago's best neighborhoods by the Chicago Magazine in 2014.
North Center’s, “center” is at the intersection at Irving Park Road, Lincoln Avenue, and Damen Avenue. From this six-way intersection, you can find a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and clubs to suit any persuasion, event, or holiday. North Center is home to the nationally-broadcast WGN television network, as well as a well-established DeVry Institute campus.
Where to Eat and Shop
While North Center certainly offers a variety, it may seem to roll at a slower pace than some of the other neighborhoods in Chicago. Of course, this can offer advantages for those looking for houses in Chicago or are buying a condo – far enough away from the city for a bit of tranquility and peace for families and young professionals, while close enough to quickly get to any exciting happenings within the city.
Having said that, North Center is often a destination for city-dwellers further afield. They come for the food. For outstanding Chinese fare with finger-licking orange chicken, head to Orange Garden. This local establishment has been around for years and years, offering dependable and consistent service. For beer and grub, check out Half Acre Beer Company. This incredibly popular brewery plus restaurant next door caters to beer snobs, know-it-alls, and everyone in-between. It’s a must for upscale bar food and more beers than you could ever hope to drink before “last call.”
For a family-friendly neighborhood, the bar scene is happening. Locals and far-flungers visit Martyrs’ – Beck, Los Lobos, and Pete Townshend have all performed here at this former post office. International and world music is also showcased, so something for everyone!
While there are many quirky and boutique shops in North Center, why not try something different? Architectural Artifacts, a salvage shop, has troves of old doors, tiles, pillars, furniture, and everything else you can imagine coming out of a demolished building. While pricey, it’s an inspiring stop for antique lovers or simply the curious.
If you’re looking for houses for sale in Chicago, consider North Center – a family-friendly neighborhood that offers plenty to do, while still holding onto a quiet, residential atmosphere.
