Edison Park – the Small Town in Chicago’s Backyard

Located on the far northwest of Chicago and near the O’Hare international airport, Edison Park is further afield from the city, imbuing the community with a distinctive suburban feel. This seems by design. Edison park locals have worked hard over the years to preserve Edison Park’s small-town vibe, encouraging home buyers to look here when searching for houses for sale in Chicago. Perhaps that’s why locals have trended towards voting down large-scale condo developments and instead retaining charm of single-family homes and residential apartments.

Incorporated as a village in 1881, residential and commercial developers advertised the availability of electricity in their sales pitches when promoting houses for sale in Chicago. With Thomas Alva Edison’s blessing, the township was renamed as “Edison Park” in 1890. Based on the 2000 Census, Edison Park is home to the highest concentration of Irish ancestry in Chicago, making up over three-fourths of the neighborhood’s 11,000 population.

?Lowest Violent Crime Rate of Any Chicago Neighborhood

Edison Park has the lowest violent crime rate of any Chicago neighborhood. Ranked as one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago, Edison Park also boasts a variety of restaurants and bars.

While Edison Park may not exactly be in the middle of the action, the community is very safe. Largely composed of school teachers, policemen, firemen, and other city workers, the neighborhood feels protected and cared for.

What Edison Park lacks in nightlife or luxury apartments Chicago, it certainly makes up for in restaurants. And if there is an attraction or restaurant outside of this safe community, you can easily ride on the Northwest Highway and have the city life right at your fingertips.

Restaurants and Shopping in Edison Park

The commercial district of Edison Park is small, but impactful. Many family-run restaurants, as well as bigger chains, and bars can be found off the Northwest Highway and along Olmsted Avenue. Italian and pizzerias certainly take the limelight, with Moretti's being touted as one of the best pizza places, as well as offering a lovely beer garden. Armands is considered the best for Italian fare.

Things to Do with Kids

Edison Park offers a safe and family-oriented community for kids of all ages. Not only are the public schools top-notch, there is plenty to do for kids when school lets out.

Off Northwest Highway is “An Elephant Can Paint.” This shop run by owner Vicky Bellisario provides an opportunity for both kids and parents to try their hand at painting pottery. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the results when they come out of the historic kiln – an old savings & loan vault!

Monument Playlot Park is another kiddie-favorite. Located on Avondale Avenue, this playground honors Army and Navy vets with the black-and-white pillars. Kids may also enjoy the 10-acre Olympia Park, also located on Avondale Avenue. Olympia offers basketball, tennis courts, a soccer field, a spray-pool, and much more!
