Magnet for the Wealthy Since 1880

Edgewater is bordered by Foster Avenue to the south, Devon Avenue to the north, Ravenswood Avenue to the west, and Lake Michigan to the east. Perhaps the most celebrated feature of Edgewater is that it’s on the edge of…. You guessed it, water!

The Edgewater neighborhood contains several beaches that are open from spring through autumn. However, nature doesn’t stop at high tide – you can find Chicago’s largest park, Lincoln Park, stretch south from Edgewater for nearly 7 miles into downtown.

Edgewater got its start as a summer enclave for Chicago’s upper classes in the 1880s. Even today, Edgewater is still a hotspot for the well-to-do. They’re drawn to Edgewater’s Chicago Lake Shore Drive Properties, luxury penthouses, high rise apartments, and Chicago high rise condos. All these and more contribute to a stunning skyline along the coast of Lake Michigan. Edgewater’s west offers more variety in terms of housing stock, outfitted with commercial businesses, single-family homes, and apartments.

Unique Tapestry of Neighborhoods

Edgewater is composed of several closely-knit neighborhoods: Andersonville, Magnolia Glen, Edgewater Glen, and Edgewater Beach.

Perhaps the most well-known of these neighborhoods is quaint and historic Andersonville. Located in Edgewater’s northwestern quadrant, this once quiet village inhabited by mostly Swedish immigrants is now known for a diverse population, composed of residents of European and Middle Eastern descent. The Andersonville Commercial Historic District features many locally-owned, small businesses – all adding to the rich and elective flavor of this unique Edgewater neighborhood.

Edgewater Glen, located in the north-central region of Edgewater is so named after the streets Glenwood Ave. and Glenlake Ave. that crisscross at the neighborhood’s center. Composed largely of single-family homes in Victorian style, the neighborhood’s most distinguishing feature is not the tree-lined streets, but the flora and fauna in the backyards. Peek over the fence of any Edgewater Glen home, and you’ll find a stunning array of well-cared for gardens. The Edgewater Glen Association hosts a garden walk each July, where visitors can step beyond the garden gates and be inspired by the luscious creativity hidden in this neighborhood.

Condos for Sale in Chicago’s Edgewater Beach

Edgewater Beach is largely composed of many condos for sale in Chicago, penthouse apartments, Chicago Lake Shore Drive Properties, Chicago high rise condos, and apartment buildings. Broadway is a prominent thoroughfare in the neighborhood, featuring a variety of restaurant options in a dizzying array of tastes from around the globe.

Sheridan road skirts Edgewater’s eastern lakefront to and from Lake Shore Drive. West of Broadway around Sheridan Road is Edgewater Beach. Nearby beaches include: Foster Beach and Osterman or “Hollywood” Beach.

Lakefront parks are scattered about, ensuring you are never far from both water and greenspace in this neck of Edgewater neighborhood. The tall old locust trees that line the road are met by even taller high-rise apartments and condos. True, a few mansions are still standing in this area, some dating as far back as the 1880s. However, many of the original mansions were torn down to make way for the luxury condos you see today.

As these four elementary schools feed into Nicholas Senn High School, the high school remains very competitive.

Good Eatin’!

Edgewater’s Andersonville was once home to the highest population of Swedes outside of Stockholm! If it’s a sweet treat you’re after, you can find many items to satiate your cravings at one of Andersonville’s many Swedish restaurants and cafes (Svea Restaurant is always a hit!) For German fare, check out the Old Stein Inn, Sushi at Yellowfin, or BBQ at Chad’s BBQ. Many more options abound throughout Edgewater.
